Monday
Today I was sick so I stayed home resting up for Comm Tech the next day!

Tuesday
Today I started up on my Chapter 13 Questions on the Graphic Design and learned about the principles of design.

Wednesday
I continued working on my Chapter 13 questions and answered questions about different types of font and the elements of design.

Thursday
Today I finished the Chapter 13 questions and started working on my Thinking and Inquiry and Reflection questions on the sheet we were handed out.

Friday
Today I finished all of the questions on the handout and posted the answers to this blog post.


Graphic Design-Poster Questions

Background
1. Identify and describe the six principles of design.
2.What are the six major styles of type.

1) Rhythm: Rhythm is repetition, It occurs when certain elements are repeated. It adds movement to a design to make it look like something is happening.

Balance: Balance is graphic design is things being placed in a way that gives the impression of steadiness. Formal Balance is achieved when a line is drawn through the center
of the design would create two halves that are symmetrical.

Informal Balance is more subtle. It is the balance of objects that may look different but have equal weight to the eye.
Proportion: Proportion has to do with the size relationship of one part to another. By itself, the size of an object has little meaning. Only by comparing it to something else can we say it’s too big or small. In graphic design the proportions of one element to another should be correct. Although some elements may be larger or smaller than others, the effect should be pleasing.

Variety: Variety is difference. Without variety, life would be boring because everything would be the same. Variety in graphic design may add interest and excitement.

Emphasis: Graphic designers are constantly thinking of ways to attract your eye to the most important part of the message design. One of the ways this is done is by emphasis, making one element stand out.

Harmony: Is when various elements of a message design work well together. When this happens, the design has harmony. When all elements of the design look as if they belong together, harmony has been achieved

2) Roman, Square Serif, Sans Serif, Text, Script and Novelty.

3) Line, shape, form, space, color, texture and shades of dark or light.

4) Roman text is usually used in most textbooks because it is easiest to read.

5) The point size of a typeface is determined by measuring type sizes and spaces between lines. The point which is equal to 1/72. For example, 12 point type may be set on a 14 point line space.

6) Thumbnail sketch are generally small, quick sketches drawn to try out several ideas and show how something might look. Usually drawn in pencil and include little detail.
Rough layouts are more accurate drawings that contains all the information a printer needs such as size and location of the elements to produce the final product. Usually drawn in pencil, but in actual size of the final product.
Comprehensive layouts are full color versions that shows how the product will look after it is printed. These full color layouts are good because before the job is produced you can save time and money by making changes.

7) Line art is made up of solid, dark lines and shapes drawn on a white surface where as continuous-tone images are composed of varying shades of gray such as those drawn with charcoal, airbrush or pencil.

8) To copy fit, first you must count how many characters will fit in one line of type. Then multiply this number by the number of lines that will fit on one page. This gives the total number of characters. They compare this number with the actual number of characters in the written copy.

9) Desktop publishing systems were microcomputers and laser printers teamed together in the 1980s. Desktop publishing systems combine a microcomputer, laser printer and software.

10) Paste-ups are done by pasting the copy and line art in place on a white board. Working from the rough layout supplied by the designer, a paste up artist arranges the typeset copy and reproductions of line art on the board. Then a window must be created. This is done by attaching a patch of red paper plastic to the place where the photograph is to appear. The elements are coated on the back with wax. The wax acts as a kind of glue and the elements can be moved around until they are in exactly the right place.


Thinking and Inquiry
1) Describe the purpose and target audience for your poster.
2)Determine and list the content for your poster. Describe how the design principles are incorporated into your poster.
3)What is the focal point of the design of your poster and how will it be presented in this design?

1) The target audience for my poster is people in the Robotics field or interested in Robotics team to draw them into our team and also represent our sponsors with a good looking mascot.

2) Balance is used in my poster by balancing out the colors with the cape being yellow while most of the big pieces of armor is black with the smaller parts being yellow to making the picture looking very balanced.

Proximity is used in my poster by connecting the flag with all of the logos and information on it with the knight. The two are being connected with the flagpole he is holding, by doing this it is creating unity.

Repetition is used in my poster by doing a black and yellow pattern. Going black then painting the next rivet yellow this creates a pattern and the repetition is there.

Contrast is used in my poster by making the Shield and the Flag stick out because they look much bigger then most of the other things in the poster and really make them stand out.

White space is used in my poster to really draw your eye to the colorful knight that is there. With the background being white you are not distracted with anything else going on but the mascot. This is also used on the flag to show the logos and info presented on it.

3) The focal point of my poster is this new mascot for the Knights of Alloy Robotics team. The colorful knight also draws your eye into the flag which shows the Tenaris Sponsorship logo, The 1535 and the Knights of Alloy name.

2) Times New Roman was used to make the 1535 and the Knights of Alloy on the flag really stand out and look clean cut and official.

3) The yellow over top of the black really makes certain parts of the armor stand out and attract the eye. The red Canadian maple leaf on the white shield also attracts attention by standing out with its different colors.

4) Problems I had were retracing the outline to do a paint fill without filling in the whole picture and giving the knight more definition on his muscles.

5) I could have defined my Knights muscles more by using the Dodge and Burn tools and defined the outline more by going over it.

6) My poster is a 3, it is good but it defiantly can be improved.

Week 3 Blog Post

Monday

Today was family day so we got the day off.

Tuesday

Today we continued working on our Knights of Alloy posters where I traced most of the outline with the paintbrush and defined the outline better before I coloured it in.

Wednesday

We continued working on our Alloy posters today where I put on the Tenaris Logo and fixed up the flag. We also learned to use Irfanview. This program is excellent for setting up slide shows and doing batch conversions of many photos.

Thursday

Today I coloured in all of the Knight for the poster and fixed the outline. I am almost finished all i have left is to colour in some of the white spots and erase the sketch's mistakes to make to look more defined.

Friday

Today I finished my poster and saved it as Jpeg and posted this blog.

Today I continued working on my character poster assignment putting colour and changing the font.


Tuesday

I finished my Character Poster putting the finishing touches on it and saving the final copy to my drive.


Wednesday

Today I started working on my Knights Of Alloy sketch in Photoshop colouring in the sketch and fixing and erasing some of the lines.


Thursday

Today I continued working on my Knights of Alloy sketch colouring in most of the picture and making it nice then I video taped the Pep Rally.


Friday

Today I went and videotaped the Wrestling Tournament and got some footage which I then captured on Windows Media Player and saved to the Drive.

Gr.12 Comm Tech Week One Blog Post

Monday
Today we started this class and got the outline and expectations of what is happening throughout the semester. We got some outline sheets and reviewed some things. We received a project to do an essay on the decline of newsprint which I finished that day.

Tuesday

Today we got an assignment to go into Mr. Vye's Construction class and take pictures of a certain machine. Then in Photoshop we used the selection tool to crop out the background so the machine was just by itself.

Wednesday

Mr. Vye labeled the pictures of the cropped out machines so we went into Corel Draw and we typed them out and we labeled the machine with size 18 font and using arrows to indicate the placements.

Thursday

Today we put the finishing touches on our Machine labeling assignment and printed them out to be laminated. Then we started working on the design logo for the Knights of Alloy from the design they sketched for us.

Friday

Today I continued working on the logo and did this blog post before I went to the basketball game.

Print in a Digital World

The age of print has dominated the way people receive their news for the past 100 years. Whether it was you picked up a paper from a stand or just got delivered to your house by a young teen trying to earn some pocket money, this was the way of life. Now with the new wave of technology coming in, this era of paper seems to be coming to an end and in my opinion this a good thing.

With people rushing around in this fast paced world , technology has become an asset for making things easier and getting things done. With things such as Maps, Music, Calendars, Games and Internet on a single device, the need for a paper is imminent. The working man could use this to read the paper while riding the subway to work or on his break. The ease of picking up your Ipad and switching from working on something to reading an article on the paper is something today's working society is all about.

The rise of digital news print also will help our enviroment out. The downloading of a newspaper instead of buying one will greatly decrease litter around streets and help save material needed for other things. The function of looking at an old news article on your computer will also be handy if you are looking for a certain article instead of searching through mounds of old papers.

With papers being transferred onto technology, a new generation of people will be able to experience the paper like their parents did before them. With young people always being in a rush with no time to read the paper, these new applications will help make print sleek and savy again. This age of teens will now be informed and up to date to things happening around the world and their community and not be left completly oblivious to current events.

The decline of print and the rise of technology based newspaper should something embraced for the better and with every day companies discovering new technology things can only get better.
