Final Blog Post- Advances In Communication Technology

The advances in communication technology thus far have been very great. People across the world have been craving the need to communicate and many companies are making things to fill these needs. Things such as using the Internet to talk to people across the world via video chat, Instant Messenger,Facebook, Blogs, Twitter and Text Messaging are just some of the ways people can communicate with each other. These ways of communication can only look to be improved on and get even better in the future and brand new products are going to be created too.In 2020, I think the things we use now will be only 10 times as better. With companies constantly coming up with new versions and updates of the old models we will see great improvements in the way we communicate. Instant messaging, Facebook and Twitter could all be updated from your car as you drive, as when you speak the words turn into text. Televisions could become an universal media station being able to surf the Internet and also talk to people through video chat and see them on your television screen. Things such as mailmen and paper boys could be eliminated because the mail would just automatically be wired to your house by computers. These new ways of communication could be very easy to connect to anyone around the world in a matter of seconds. These new products and advances could also lead to job loss to certain people, the invasion of privacy and the need for things instantaneously. People in our era have a very low patience and with new and easier ways to communicate this will faciliate this new eras needs.

Chapter Six Questions

Chapter Six Review Questions

Q. 1. Describe how digital video editing evolved starting in the 1990's.

A. In the early 1990s, videos on the TV appeared too small, and the video looked lik it had a strobe effect throughout. As technology improved, the pictures started getting bigger and the strobe effect was disappearing. Tis was great news for professional; videographers. By 1995, desktop video systems had reached nearly the same price level as mid range professional videotape equipment. Pioneers in the industry like Avid technologies and newtek were introducing non- linear digital desktop systems aimed at the even videographer. Avid based their programs on PC ad macintosh, and Newtek stuck with the Amiga. Silicon graphics was also in the race with their own machines that could produce stunning animations once only seen in the movies. In late 1995, many new revolutionary video capture boards were being introduced at low prices. Most notably was the the Miro DC30 video capture board which retailed for around $1300 Canadian. The board came packaged with Adobe Premiere, Adobe photoshop, and Asymetrix 3d. It was voted as the best video caputre board under $2000 by Videomaker magazine in their best off 1995.

2. Q. There are three types of editing methods. Name each of them and describe when you would use each type.

A. The three types of editing methods are Edit As you shoot, Tape editing, and computer editing.Edit as you shoot is when you plan out all the shot types, angles, ad camera movments so that the video is perfect.Tape editing is when one takes short segments that have a small amount of footage, and short length. These segments have no special effects or transitions so it makes sense to edit on a tape based system, so it makes sense to edit on a tape based system. straight cuts from one shot to another does not require a large time commitment on a tape system.Computer Editing is the most popular type of editing. Almost every production company in North America uses some type of computer system to make their videos with. A computer editing system will consist of a few key components. First of all, the computer must be capable of handling the fast speeds that digitial video requires. That means the ahrd drive must be at least a 7200 RPM drive. SCSI is not necessary to maintain the data rate required. it is an added expense that only propfessionals really need.

3. Q. Whare are the features needed on a computer in order to perform digital video editing. Give a comprehensive list and descriptions

A. The minimum requirements for digital video editing are:Pentium II, 400Mhz, increased processing speed128 MB RAM, so you can store large, high quality video files20 GB, 7200RPM Hard Drive - for storing large, high quality video filesFirewire card- so you can transfer the videos to your computer for editing8MB video card- so your computer can process high quality videosSound Card- So you can hear the audio being played in the video

4. Q. What information is contained on the edit decision list?

A. The EDL is used to keep track of your raw video footage. it can also be used during the editing process to locate your shots quickly, to estimate the final length of your video, arrange your shots in the proposed order, and mark the scenes that have already been edited into the final masterpiece. This essential tool will make editing easier and quicker in the long run.

5. Q. Define Editing Style. What are the 2 types of editing styles outlined in this chapter? Give 2 characteristics for each of these styles.

A. An editing style is the distinct way in which an editor makes decisions about length of cuts, which shots should follow each other, and the overall look of the video. The 2 types of editing styles outlined in this chapter are Edit to the beat of the music, and pace Editing. Editing t othe beat involves inserting music and other audio, so that the beat fits the mood of the scene. Pace editing involves using different music so that it makes the pace of the scene.

6. Q. When considering pace in a video what must be considered? Give four points on how you know when to edit with a slow pace and four points for a fast pace.

A. When considering a pace one must consider the speed of the music to be used. Fast music will require a different pace than slow music. The second consideration is the mood of the video. As with music, different moods will require different paces. The final consideration is the audience. Teenagers require a more attention grabbing attack while adults prefer a more deliberate approach. A slow pace has an average shot length between 5 to 9 seconds. In other words each shot in the video is on the screen for a while giving the viewer ample time to absorb what they are seeing. Most television dramas and comedies work with a slow pace. You see each shot long enough to know what is going on. A fast pace seems to be getting faster and faster as time goes on. With the invention of music videos in the early 1980's, fast pace editing has soared to new heights. The average shot length for this type of editing is 15 frames (1/2 second) to 2 seconds. It is very difficult to do fast pace editing without and edit controller that is very accurate. The edit controller must have a separate time cod readout for frames. It is possible to do fast pace editing without an edit controller, however you must be very quick with your reflexes and very careful with your in and out points.

7. When editing as you shoot, there are many points to remember. name at least 3 of these pointers and explain why each of them is important to remember.

A. When editing as you shoot three of the important pointers are to
1. Plan out camera movement such as pans tilts, and zooms. This is important because, if you get the camera in the wrong place during the shot there is no way to edit it after.
2. Plan out the types of shots and angles you will use. This is important, because you cannot edit the video so that the shot is another angle after, so you have to get the shots right.
3. Always use a tripod when shooting to make sure each shot is steady. This is important, because there is no way to edit out the shaking of the camera.

Cheetah Energy Drink

In Comm Tech we started doing this project where we had to make our own 30 second commerical for the energy drink "Cheetah Power Surge". First off we had to make storyboards planning out what was going to happen in our video, then after approval we got to go outside and shoot our video. Me and Mitch had to run to the corner store real quick and because they didn't have any Cheetah we had to tape the logo onto a can of another energy drink. Then mitch, nessa and I heaed to the track right outside of the school. We got our shots and the next day started editing which clips we needed. After the clips were deited and fixed it was ready to be submitted. I hope I win the $25,000!!!!

Chapter 5 Questions

1. There are three stages to the Production Process. Name each of these stages and give a brief description of what is done in each.1) Pre-production- the planning stage of the production process

2. Production- the second stage in the production process when you actually videotape or collect raw footage for your video

3. Post-Production- the final stage where it can sometimes last longer than both pre production and production. Mainly editing.2. Draw and label different parts of the story board. (See above)

5. There are four hints to remember during production. Name and describe each of these hints.
1) Rehearsing- have the talent run through the part a few times.
2)Set Up Your Shots- If you are shooting your scene or segment near a window, make sure that the camera is not pointing at the window itself.
3) Take Extra Of Everything- When you go out on a live shoot don’t be cheap with the amount of things you bring with you.
4) Schedule, schedule, schedule!- A well planned production always has a well planned schedule.

6. Name the three aspects of Post-Production
1) Video and Audio Editing
2) Soundtrack Composition
3) Marketing and Advertising

7. You are about to start marketing and advertising a new action movie called Total Impact. Come up with 5 creative marketing and advertising ideas to sell the movie.
1) Posters
2) Slide show
3) Short Video/ Commercial
4) T Shirts
5) Newspaper/Magazine Ads

Street Styles Opinion Piece

Street Fashion Blog Opinion Piece

I think Stefania Yarhi will be successful in her blogging quest to build a career because her website is original and it has been gaining more and more buzz after Yarhi and this site were profiled on MuchMusic and Elle Canada. This recognition can only get people talking and get her site more hits with people interested in her work.

Blogs are good avenues to use as a portfolio because not only is it a place to store all your work but you can also share it with others. With your thoughts, designs and work on a public place for all to see it gets your work recognition and also people can provide praise and criticism to you.

The essence of Street Style Fashion Photography is to show street fashion. The blog shows real people with their different unique fashions walking around the streets of Toronto. The blog is shot guerilla style in the streets and at fashion shows.

Yarhi created the blog because she has a passion for fashion photography and she wanted to put her foot in the door of that business. Not only did she just want to pay the bills but she also wanted to gain some followers and receive recognition from people in the fashion business.

The blog had defiantly opened doors for Yarhi, as she was profiled in the shopping magazine Loulou and Muchmusic produced a 3 minute segment on her as a street photographer. That job led her to being Muchmusic’s correspondant for the Toronto Fashion Week. Elle Canada hired her to do street style photo shoots. Her reputation came to the attention of editors at the alternative weekly, NOW, where she shoots the popular "My Style" feature.

She promotes her blog through promoting it in her other works with Elle and Muchmusic. By making friends with other blogs, people can easily link to her site. She also gets the word out on Facebook, Twitter and other blogs. Social Media really helps her branch out.

Week 4 Blog Post

Monday
Today I was sick so I stayed home resting up for Comm Tech the next day!

Tuesday
Today I started up on my Chapter 13 Questions on the Graphic Design and learned about the principles of design.

Wednesday
I continued working on my Chapter 13 questions and answered questions about different types of font and the elements of design.

Thursday
Today I finished the Chapter 13 questions and started working on my Thinking and Inquiry and Reflection questions on the sheet we were handed out.

Friday
Today I finished all of the questions on the handout and posted the answers to this blog post.

Graphic Design-Poster Questions

Background
1. Identify and describe the six principles of design.
2.What are the six major styles of type.
3.Name the elements of design.
4.What type style issued for the text in most textbooks? Why?
5.How is the point size of a typeface determined?
6.Name and describe the three kinds of sketches produced during the graphic design process.
7. Tell the difference between line art and continuous-tone images.
8.List the steps in copy fitting.
9.What is a desktop publishing system?
10.Briefly describe the process of preparing a paste-up.

1) Rhythm: Rhythm is repetition, It occurs when certain elements are repeated. It adds movement to a design to make it look like something is happening.

Balance: Balance is graphic design is things being placed in a way that gives the impression of steadiness. Formal Balance is achieved when a line is drawn through the center
of the design would create two halves that are symmetrical.

Informal Balance is more subtle. It is the balance of objects that may look different but have equal weight to the eye.
Proportion: Proportion has to do with the size relationship of one part to another. By itself, the size of an object has little meaning. Only by comparing it to something else can we say it’s too big or small. In graphic design the proportions of one element to another should be correct. Although some elements may be larger or smaller than others, the effect should be pleasing.

Variety: Variety is difference. Without variety, life would be boring because everything would be the same. Variety in graphic design may add interest and excitement.

Emphasis: Graphic designers are constantly thinking of ways to attract your eye to the most important part of the message design. One of the ways this is done is by emphasis, making one element stand out.

Harmony: Is when various elements of a message design work well together. When this happens, the design has harmony. When all elements of the design look as if they belong together, harmony has been achieved

2) Roman, Square Serif, Sans Serif, Text, Script and Novelty.

3) Line, shape, form, space, color, texture and shades of dark or light.

4) Roman text is usually used in most textbooks because it is easiest to read.

5) The point size of a typeface is determined by measuring type sizes and spaces between lines. The point which is equal to 1/72. For example, 12 point type may be set on a 14 point line space.

6) Thumbnail sketch are generally small, quick sketches drawn to try out several ideas and show how something might look. Usually drawn in pencil and include little detail.
Rough layouts are more accurate drawings that contains all the information a printer needs such as size and location of the elements to produce the final product. Usually drawn in pencil, but in actual size of the final product.
Comprehensive layouts are full color versions that shows how the product will look after it is printed. These full color layouts are good because before the job is produced you can save time and money by making changes.

7) Line art is made up of solid, dark lines and shapes drawn on a white surface where as continuous-tone images are composed of varying shades of gray such as those drawn with charcoal, airbrush or pencil.

8) To copy fit, first you must count how many characters will fit in one line of type. Then multiply this number by the number of lines that will fit on one page. This gives the total number of characters. They compare this number with the actual number of characters in the written copy.

9) Desktop publishing systems were microcomputers and laser printers teamed together in the 1980s. Desktop publishing systems combine a microcomputer, laser printer and software.

10) Paste-ups are done by pasting the copy and line art in place on a white board. Working from the rough layout supplied by the designer, a paste up artist arranges the typeset copy and reproductions of line art on the board. Then a window must be created. This is done by attaching a patch of red paper plastic to the place where the photograph is to appear. The elements are coated on the back with wax. The wax acts as a kind of glue and the elements can be moved around until they are in exactly the right place.

Thinking and Inquiry
1) Describe the purpose and target audience for your poster.
2)Determine and list the content for your poster. Describe how the design principles are incorporated into your poster.
3)What is the focal point of the design of your poster and how will it be presented in this design?

1) The target audience for my poster is people in the Robotics field or interested in Robotics team to draw them into our team and also represent our sponsors with a good looking mascot.

2) Balance is used in my poster by balancing out the colors with the cape being yellow while most of the big pieces of armor is black with the smaller parts being yellow to making the picture looking very balanced.

Proximity is used in my poster by connecting the flag with all of the logos and information on it with the knight. The two are being connected with the flagpole he is holding, by doing this it is creating unity.

Repetition is used in my poster by doing a black and yellow pattern. Going black then painting the next rivet yellow this creates a pattern and the repetition is there.

Contrast is used in my poster by making the Shield and the Flag stick out because they look much bigger then most of the other things in the poster and really make them stand out.

White space is used in my poster to really draw your eye to the colorful knight that is there. With the background being white you are not distracted with anything else going on but the mascot. This is also used on the flag to show the logos and info presented on it.

3) The focal point of my poster is this new mascot for the Knights of Alloy Robotics team. The colorful knight also draws your eye into the flag which shows the Tenaris Sponsorship logo, The 1535 and the Knights of Alloy name.

Reflection Sheet

1) Describe how any of the design principles were used in the design of your poster. Be specific using examples from your poster.
2) What font(s) were chosen and why?
3)How was color used to attract attention?
4) List any problems that were encountered in the design of your poster.
5) List any improvements that could have been made to your poster.
6) Rate the overall quality of your poster based on a level of 1-4, with 1 representing poor quality and 4 representing excellent quality.

1) Balance is used in my poster by balancing out the colors with the cape being yellow while most of the big pieces of armor is black with the smaller parts being yellow to making the picture looking very balanced.

2) Times New Roman was used to make the 1535 and the Knights of Alloy on the flag really stand out and look clean cut and official.

3) The yellow over top of the black really makes certain parts of the armor stand out and attract the eye. The red Canadian maple leaf on the white shield also attracts attention by standing out with its different colors.

4) Problems I had were retracing the outline to do a paint fill without filling in the whole picture and giving the knight more definition on his muscles.

5) I could have defined my Knights muscles more by using the Dodge and Burn tools and defined the outline more by going over it.

6) My poster is a 3, it is good but it defiantly can be improved.

Print in a Digital World

The age of print has dominated the way people receive their news for the past 100 years. Whether it was you picked up a paper from a stand or just got delivered to your house by a young teen trying to earn some pocket money, this was the way of life. Now with the new wave of technology coming in, this era of paper seems to be coming to an end and in my opinion this a good thing.

With people rushing around in this fast paced world , technology has become an asset for making things easier and getting things done. With things such as Maps, Music, Calendars, Games and Internet on a single device, the need for a paper is imminent. The working man could use this to read the paper while riding the subway to work or on his break. The ease of picking up your Ipad and switching from working on something to reading an article on the paper is something today's working society is all about.

The rise of digital news print also will help our enviroment out. The downloading of a newspaper instead of buying one will greatly decrease litter around streets and help save material needed for other things. The function of looking at an old news article on your computer will also be handy if you are looking for a certain article instead of searching through mounds of old papers.

With papers being transferred onto technology, a new generation of people will be able to experience the paper like their parents did before them. With young people always being in a rush with no time to read the paper, these new applications will help make print sleek and savy again. This age of teens will now be informed and up to date to things happening around the world and their community and not be left completly oblivious to current events.

The decline of print and the rise of technology based newspaper should something embraced for the better and with every day companies discovering new technology things can only get better.

Technology in 2020

The advances in communication technology thus far have been very great. People across the world have been craving the need to communicate and many companies are making things to fill these needs. Things such as using the Internet to talk to people across the world via video chat, Instant Messenger,Facebook, Blogs, Twitter and Text Messaging are just some of the ways people can communicate with each other. These ways of communication can only look to be improved on and get even better in the future and brand new products are going to be created too.

In 2020, I think the things we use now will be only 10 times as better.
